Specifying the roof for a new build is one of the more permanent decisions you'll make. Unlike paint or fittings, it isn't something you change in a few years. Get it right and you'll have decades of weatherproof, low-maintenance protection. Get it wrong and you'll pay for it in energy bills and early repairs.
Match the roof to the climate
Ballarat sees cold, frosty winters, hot dry summers and the occasional intense storm. That makes lightweight steel roofing with proper insulation a strong default choice. It performs in temperature extremes, sheds water and snow loads cleanly, and stands up to wind better than older tile systems.
Pick a profile that suits the design
Colorbond comes in several profiles, each with a different aesthetic. Classic corrugated suits country and traditional homes, while flatter standing-seam looks great on contemporary architecture. We can show you samples on-site to help you visualise the finish.
Don't skimp on insulation and sarking
The roof itself is only half the system. Reflective sarking, bulk insulation and proper ventilation in the roof cavity make an enormous difference to comfort and running costs. Spec these properly at construction and you'll never have to retrofit.
Plan gutters and downpipes early
Gutter sizing, downpipe placement and connection to stormwater all need to be coordinated with the roof design. Get this wrong and you'll have overflow issues in heavy rain.
Choose a colour you can live with
Roof colour affects how hot your home gets and how it sits in the streetscape. Lighter colours reflect more heat in summer. Darker colours look striking but absorb more heat — worth considering if you're not running solar.
Work with a roofer from day one
Bringing a roofer into early planning conversations almost always saves money. We can flag issues with falls, framing, penetrations and access before they become expensive variations on site.
